Group Programs at TNP

PTSD Program

Our group PTSD program provides a supportive environment for individuals affected by trauma, combining psychoeducation, skills training, and peer connection. Participants learn about the nature of PTSD and its impact on the brain and body, gaining a deeper understanding of their symptoms. Skills training focuses on practical techniques for managing anxiety, intrusive thoughts, and emotional regulation. Group members also share experiences and build connections, fostering a sense of community and reducing feelings of isolation. This structured, therapeutic program equips participants with tools for recovery and resilience, empowering them to reclaim control over their lives.

Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT)

Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) is an evidence-based approach that combines mindfulness practices with cognitive-behavioral techniques. It is designed to help individuals manage depression, anxiety, and stress by fostering awareness of present-moment thoughts and feelings without judgment. MBCT teaches participants to break the cycle of negative thinking patterns, helping them to prevent relapse in conditions such as recurrent depression. Through guided meditation, cognitive exercises, and group discussions, individuals learn practical tools to enhance emotional resilience and well-being. MBCT is typically delivered in an 8-week program and is suitable for adults seeking long-term mental health support.

FAQ’s

How many people are in the group?

Each group is capped at a maximum of eight participants.

I’ve never done group therapy before, what’s it like?

The majority of people who try a group program for the first time are surprised at the sense of connection that forms within a fairly short time. Each group has a bit of a different focus with some involving more personal sharing whilst others are more focused on practicing strategies. Although we all vary in how introverted/extroverted we are, the reality is that humans are social creatures and we often do our best learning in a shared environment.

I’m feeling anxious at the thought of joining a group. Maybe this means it’s not for me?

Almost everyone feels nervous the first week, this usually settles significantly by the 2nd-3rd week.

Can I keep seeing my own therapist whilst doing the group program?

Of course. Group work and individual therapy go well together.

I’m interested in the PTSD program. Will I need to talk about my trauma? Will I be expected to hear details of other people’s trauma?

The PTSD program focuses on the shared experience of living with PTSD and learning new ways of managing it. Trauma is often discussed in a general way however to maintain psychological safety, sharing of details is discouraged.

How much does the program cost?

This depends on each individual’s referral source. Workcover, Open Arms and DVA have set fees which are covered entirely by the funder. If you are referred under a Mental Health Plan (Medicare), there is a joining fee prior to commencement (MBCT $240, PTSD $295) and each session attended is bulk billed meaning no further out of pocket.

What do I need to bring?

Comfortable clothes, sturdy footwear (some sessions may be partially outdoors weather dependant) and most importantly an open and curious mind. Notes will be provided in each session but bringing something to write with is a good idea.
